Overbooked, thy name is November

Journal Entry: Tue Nov 10, 2009, 11:35 AM
Well I finally took the plunge and committed to trying to do that novel for NaNoWriMo. I'm not sure why this seems harder. Two years ago, I decided to try to write a tale on November 7th, and finished the 60,000 word first draft by 3am December 1st.

I only wish I had registered that year. A friend had told me about NaNoWriMo a year or two before that, but I hadn't written anything that wasn't business related since the mid-80's. then it wasn't anything longer than a few short stories. What became that first novel length story came from a thought experiment of what if, but then took on a life of its own. But I did those 60k words much faster than this year is turning out to be.

Of course, to be fair it was a simpler revenge story, but as the plots become more complex, progress is slower.

So... now I have to do at least 1700 words a day for the 4th novel with the same leads. I'm still working on setting up background for the main action and clues for what will come. and to prevent too much time lost into research, I'm only highlighting sections for that. I do know it will probably be spring before I start to publish the thing, if I do. (I'm reaching the point where soon I might as well publish by email... though I do want to finish the tale for those who have bothered to say hi)

And since I am still partway through the 3rd novel, I'm still publishing a chapter every week during November. I'd hoped to have a backlog ready so I wouldn't ahve to try to work on both, but the intrigue is a very slow write. So I'm still doing a thousand words every few days here.

Add to that the reviewing, emails, posts, the coming holiday and a growing toothache when money is beyond tight. (and the quiet from all the Dragon Age junkies out there, you know who you are! ;)

Well, yes, I am. Been playing since the Red Box Basic in the early 80's; I also play video games and an MMO. I have read many hundreds of SF/fantasy books. To complete the geek trifecta I have a science degree and worked in the software industry for over a decade.

Your point?
